PCOS or Polycystic ovary syndrome is a complex condition caused by hormonal imbalance which affects women and girls of reproductive age. It can affect many body systems and create reproductive complications, metabolic derangements, psychosocial concerns and dermatological issues.

While the name Polycystic Ovary Syndrome suggests the primary cause to be ovarian cysts, the diagnostic criteria as defined by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) (also known as the Rotterdam criteria), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and by the Androgen Excess and PCOS Society (AE-PCOS), requires the presence of at least 2 of the following 3 diagnostic criteria; Hyperandrogenism, Ovulatory dysfunction and Polycystic ovarian morphology.
